Location, Location, Location: It’s true in real estate and photography…location is key.  It’s crucial that everyone is comfortable.  Maybe your kids will do best in a familiar place like your own backyard or a nearby playground or park.  I have some favorite spots but these are YOUR photos, so scout out an interesting, fun location.  Let’s plan together to find a place that will showcase your family.

Time of day:  Family life is chaotic and sometimes difficult, so I'll work with you to find the best time for you and your family.  Let’s not schedule our shoot too close to your children’s (or grandpa’s) nap time. 😀   Of course, I love to shoot during the “golden hour,” just before sunset when you get magnificent natural lighting.  If that time works for your family, that would be ideal.  Get plenty of rest the night before and give yourself plenty of time to get ready.

Clothing:  You don’t need to be all matchy-matchy, but look for colors that complement each other.  If you’re seeking understated elegance, soft pastels work well.  If you want pizzazz, look for bold accents like scarves, headbands and hats in bright colors.  Wear what makes you feel comfortable, fabulous and beautiful…because you are!

Props:  Yes, yes, yes!  Bring a blanket if you don’t want to sit on the grass so the little ones can climb all over mom and dad or the grandparents.  Bring a favorite stuffed animal or toy, ball or tennis racquet. Bring a favorite book for the toddler.

What else should we bring?  Definitely brings snacks!   Do we need chairs for anyone?

Attitude:  I get it, some folks dread family photo sessions.  Some feel they never look good in photos so they’re anxious and that leads to more awkward photos.  “I never look good in photos” becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.  I promise to work with you to get you all to relax and enjoy.  Your kids can feel it if you’re uncomfortable, so relax and have fun.  Giggle, joke, squeeze, jump, be silly.  Together we’ll capture authentic laughter and joy.
